JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on Environmental Chemistry
Which of the following is true about freons?
A.
All radicals are called freons
B.
These are chlorofluorocarbon compounds
C.
These are radicals of chlorine and chlorine monoxide
D.
These are chemicals causing skin cancer
Show answer and solution
Correct option: B
Solution
Freons are a class of compounds containing carbon, chlorine, and fluorine atoms — collectively called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). They are stable, non-toxic refrigerants that deplete the ozone layer when released into the atmosphere, but they themselves do not directly cause skin cancer; ozone depletion (their indirect effect) increases UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer. The correct identification is simply that freons = chlorofluorocarbon compounds.
