JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on Environmental Chemistry

Correct statement about smog is:
  1. A.
Classical smog also has high concentration of oxidizing agents
  2. B.
Photochemical smog has high concentration of oxidizing agents
  3. C.
Both NO2\text{NO}_2 and SO2\text{SO}_2 are present in classical smog
  4. D.
NO2\text{NO}_2 is present in classical smog
Show answer and solution

Correct option: B

Solution

Photochemical smog forms in warm, sunny conditions when NO₂ is photolyzed to produce atomic oxygen, which generates ozone and other reactive species (PAN, aldehydes). These are all strong oxidizing agents, giving photochemical smog its characteristic high oxidizing nature. Classical smog, by contrast, is reducing in nature (London smog), formed from SO₂ and particulates in cold, foggy conditions — it contains reducing agents, not oxidizing ones.
