JEE Main 2001 Chemistry question on Redox and Electrochemistry

The reaction, 3ClO−(aq)⟶ClO3−(aq)+2Cl−(aq)3\text{ClO}^-(aq) \longrightarrow \text{ClO}_3^-(aq) + 2\text{Cl}^-(aq) is an example of
  1. A.
    oxidation reaction
  2. B.
    reduction reaction
  3. C.
    disproportionation reaction
  4. D.
    decomposition reaction
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

In ClO⁻, chlorine has oxidation state +1. In the products, Cl in ClO₃⁻ has oxidation state +5 (oxidised) and Cl in Cl⁻ has oxidation state −1 (reduced). Since the same element (Cl) in the same species (ClO⁻) simultaneously undergoes both oxidation and reduction, this is a classic disproportionation reaction.
