JEE Main 2000 Chemistry question on Redox and Electrochemistry

Among the following, the species in which the oxidation number of an element is +6
  1. A.
    MnO4−\text{MnO}_4^-
  2. B.
    Cr(CN)64−\text{Cr(CN)}_6^{4-}
  3. C.
    NiF62−\text{NiF}_6^{2-}
  4. D.
    CrO2Cl2\text{CrO}_2\text{Cl}_2
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

In CrO₂Cl₂, each O is −2 and each Cl is −1. For the neutral molecule: Cr + 2(−2) + 2(−1) = 0, giving Cr = +6. This is the only species where an element reaches the +6 oxidation state (Cr⁶⁺ in chromyl chloride).
