JEE Main 2013

JEE Main 2013 Chemistry question on Atomic Structure

The correct set of four quantum numbers for the valence electrons of rubidium atom (Z=37Z = 37) is
  1. A.
    5,0,0,+125, 0, 0, +\frac{1}{2}
  2. B.
    5,1,0,+125, 1, 0, +\frac{1}{2}
  3. C.
    5,1,1,+125, 1, 1, +\frac{1}{2}
  4. D.
    5,0,1,+125, 0, 1, +\frac{1}{2}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

Rubidium (Z=37) has the electron configuration [Kr] 5s¹. The valence electron occupies the 5s orbital, so n=5, l=0 (s subshell), ml=0 (only one possible value for l=0), and ms=+½. This gives the quantum number set (5, 0, 0, +½). Option 4 is invalid because ml cannot equal 1 when l=0.
