JEE Main 2019 Mathematics question on Straight Lines and Pair of Lines

If the straight line, 2x−3y+17=02x - 3y + 17 = 0 is perpendicular to the line passing through the points (7,17)(7, 17) and (15,β)(15, \beta), then β\beta equals
  1. A.
    353\dfrac{35}{3}
  2. B.
    −5-5
  3. C.
    −353-\dfrac{35}{3}
  4. D.
    55
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

The slope of 2x - 3y + 17 = 0 is 2/3. A perpendicular line has slope -3/2.

Slope of line through (7,17) and (15,β) = (β - 17)/(15 - 7) = (β - 17)/8.

Setting equal to -3/2: (β - 17)/8 = -3/2 → β - 17 = -12 → β = 5.
