JEE Main 2001 Mathematics question on Sets Relations and Functions

If f:[1,∞)→[2,∞)f:[1,\infty) \to [2,\infty) is given by f(x)=x+1xf(x) = x + \frac{1}{x}, then f−1(x)f^{-1}(x) equals
  1. A.
    x+x2−42\frac{x + \sqrt{x^2 - 4}}{2}
  2. B.
    x1+x2\frac{x}{1 + x^2}
  3. C.
    x−x2−42\frac{x - \sqrt{x^2 - 4}}{2}
  4. D.
    1+x2−41 + \sqrt{x^2 - 4}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

To find f⁻¹(x), set y = x + 1/x, so x² - yx + 1 = 0. Solving: x = (y ± √(y² - 4))/2. Since x ∈ [1,∞), we need the larger root, giving f⁻¹(x) = (x + √(x²-4))/2. The minus sign would give values in (0,1], which is outside the domain.
