Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
A. Liquid water
B. Ice
C. Impure water
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
- A.
- B.
- C.
- D.
Show answer and solution
Correct option: D
Solution
Ice has a perfect, fully hydrogen-bonded tetrahedral network where every water molecule forms exactly 4 H-bonds in a rigid, ordered crystal lattice — this is the maximum possible H-bonding. Liquid water has slightly fewer and more transient H-bonds (~3.4 per molecule on average) due to thermal motion breaking some bonds. Impure water has dissolved solutes (ions or other species) that disrupt the H-bond network, reducing it the most. Hence the order is Ice > Liquid water > Impure water, i.e., B > A > C.
