  4. D.
    trans−[PtCl2(en)2]2+trans - [\text{PtCl}_2(\text{en})_2]^{2+}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

cis-[PtCl₂(en)₂]²⁺ is an octahedral complex (Pt⁴⁺ with two bidentate en ligands and two Cl⁻). In the cis arrangement, the two Cl ligands are on the same side, and the two en ligands wrap around the metal in a way that the complex has no plane of symmetry and no centre of inversion — it exists as non-superimposable mirror images (Δ and Λ enantiomers). The bidentate nature of en locks the geometry and removes all symmetry elements, making the complex optically active (chiral). The trans isomer, by contrast, has a C₂ axis and mirror planes that make it achiral.
