JEE Main 1985 Chemistry question on Atomic Structure
Bohr's model can explain
A.
the spectrum of hydrogen atom only
B.
spectrum of an atom or ion containing one electron only
C.
the spectrum of hydrogen molecule
D.
the solar spectrum
Show answer and solution
Correct option: B
Solution
Bohr's model applies to any one-electron (hydrogen-like) species — H, He⁺, Li²⁺, Be³⁺, etc. — because the mathematical treatment assumes a single electron orbiting a nucleus of charge Ze. It successfully predicts the spectral lines for all such species using E = -13.6 Z²/n² eV, not just for hydrogen (Z=1). Multi-electron atoms, molecules, or the solar spectrum involve electron-electron repulsions and other complexities that Bohr's model cannot handle.
