JEE Main 2001 Chemistry question on Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

An aqueous solution of 6.3 g oxalic acid dihydrate is made up to 250 mL. The volume of 0.1 N NaOH required to completely neutralise 10 mL of this solution is
  1. A.
    40 mL
  2. B.
    20 mL
  3. C.
    10 mL
  4. D.
    4 mL
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

Molar mass of oxalic acid dihydrate (H₂C₂O₄·2H₂O) = 126 g/mol. Equivalents in 6.3 g = 6.3/126 × 2 = 0.1 eq (n-factor = 2 since diprotic acid). Normality of solution = 0.1 eq / 0.250 L = 0.4 N. Using N₁V₁ = N₂V₂: 0.4 × 10 = 0.1 × V₂, giving V₂ = 40 mL.
