JEE Main 2023 Physics question on Kinetic Theory of Gases

According to law of equipartition of energy the molar specific heat of a diatomic gas at constant volume where the molecule has one additional vibrational mode is:-
  1. A.
    32R\frac{3}{2}R
  2. B.
    92R\frac{9}{2}R
  3. C.
    52R\frac{5}{2}R
  4. D.
    72R\frac{7}{2}R
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

A diatomic molecule has 3 translational + 2 rotational = 5 degrees of freedom, giving Cv = (5/2)R. Each vibrational mode contributes 2 quadratic terms (kinetic + potential), adding 1 full R to Cv. So with one vibrational mode, Cv = (5/2)R + R = (7/2)R.
