JEE Main 1979 Chemistry question on Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

A gaseous mixture contains oxygen and nitrogen in the ratio of 1:4 by weight. Therefore, the ratio of their number of molecules is
  1. A.
    1 : 4
  2. B.
    1 : 8
  3. C.
    7 : 32
  4. D.
    3 : 16
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

Let the total mass be 5 units: 1 part O₂ and 4 parts N₂ by weight.

Moles of O₂ = 1/32, Moles of N₂ = 4/28 = 1/7.

Ratio of molecules = (1/32) : (1/7) = 7 : 32.
