JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on General Principles of Metallurgy
Which one of the following reactions does not occur during extraction of copper?
A.
CaO+SiO2→CaSiO3
B.
2FeS+3O2→2FeO+2SO2
C.
2Cu2S+3O2→2Cu2O+2SO2
D.
FeO+SiO2→FeSiO3
Show answer and solution
Correct option: A
Solution
In copper extraction, the ore (copper pyrites, CuFeS₂) is smelted without adding CaO as a flux. The gangue is acidic (SiO₂), so a basic flux would be needed, but in practice FeO itself acts as the basic component and reacts directly with SiO₂ to form the slag FeSiO₃ (option 4). CaO is used as a flux in iron extraction (blast furnace), not in copper extraction — so the reaction CaO + SiO₂ → CaSiO₃ does not occur during copper metallurgy.
