JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on Redox and Electrochemistry

Which one among the following metals is the weakest reducing agent?
  1. A.
    Rb
  2. B.
    Li
  3. C.
    K
  4. D.
    Na
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

The reducing power of alkali metals is determined by their standard reduction potentials (more negative = stronger reducing agent). Although Li has the highest charge density and releases the most energy on hydration (making its E° the most negative at –3.04 V), Na has the least negative standard reduction potential (E° = –2.71 V) among the four listed metals. Rb (–2.98 V), K (–2.93 V), and Li (–3.04 V) all have more negative potentials than Na. Therefore Na is the weakest reducing agent among Rb, Li, K, and Na.
