JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on Periodic Classification

Which of the following represents the correct order of metallic character of the given elements?
  1. A.
    Be<Si<K<Mg\text{Be} < \text{Si} < \text{K} < \text{Mg}
  2. B.
    K<Mg<Be<Si\text{K} < \text{Mg} < \text{Be} < \text{Si}
  3. C.
    Be<Si<Mg<K\text{Be} < \text{Si} < \text{Mg} < \text{K}
  4. D.
    Si<Be<Mg<K\text{Si} < \text{Be} < \text{Mg} < \text{K}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

Metallic character increases down a group and decreases across a period (left to right). Si is a metalloid with the least metallic character. Be is a metal but has significant covalent character and is the least metallic among the true metals here. Mg is more metallic than Be (both in Group 2, Mg is below Be). K is an alkali metal in Period 4, far to the left, and is the most metallic of all. This gives the order: Si < Be < Mg < K.
