JEE Main 1996 Chemistry question on Atomic Structure

Which of the following has the maximum number of unpaired electrons?
  1. A.
    Mg2+\text{Mg}^{2+}
  2. B.
    Ti3+\text{Ti}^{3+}
  3. C.
    V3+\text{V}^{3+}
  4. D.
    Fe2+\text{Fe}^{2+}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

Fe²⁺ has configuration [Ar] 3d⁶. By Hund's rule, 6 electrons in 5 d-orbitals give 4 unpaired electrons. For comparison: Mg²⁺ has 0 unpaired, Ti³⁺ (3d¹) has 1, V³⁺ (3d²) has 2. Fe²⁺ with 4 unpaired electrons is the maximum.
