Total number of moles of AgCl precipitated on addition of excess of to one mole each of the following complexes , , , and is
Show answer and solution
Answer: 5
Solution
For each complex, only the ionizable Cl⁻ (outside the coordination sphere) reacts with AgNO₃:
1. [Co(NH₃)₄Cl₂]Cl → 1 Cl⁻ outside → 1 mol AgCl
2. [Ni(H₂O)₆]Cl₂ → 2 Cl⁻ outside → 2 mol AgCl
3. [Pt(NH₃)₃Cl₂]Cl → 1 Cl⁻ outside → 1 mol AgCl
4. [Pd(NH₃)₄]Cl₂ → 2 Cl⁻ outside → 2 mol AgCl
Total = 1 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 5 moles of AgCl precipitated.
