JEE Main 2001 Chemistry question on Atomic Structure

The wavelength associated with a golf ball weighing 200 g and moving at a speed of 5 m/h is of the order
  1. A.
    10−1010^{-10} m
  2. B.
    10−2010^{-20} m
  3. C.
    10−3010^{-30} m
  4. D.
    10−4010^{-40} m
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

Using de Broglie's equation: λ = h/mv

m = 0.2 kg, v = 5 m/h = 5/3600 m/s ≈ 1.39 × 10⁻³ m/s

mv = 0.2 × 1.39 × 10⁻³ = 2.78 × 10⁻⁴ kg·m/s

λ = 6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ / 2.78 × 10⁻⁴ ≈ 2.4 × 10⁻³⁰ m

This is of the order 10⁻³⁰ m, confirming that macroscopic objects have extremely small (physically insignificant) de Broglie wavelengths.
