JEE Main 2013 Mathematics question on Inverse Trigonometric Functions

The value of cot⁡{∑n=123cot⁡−1(1+∑k=1n2k)}\cot\left\{\sum_{n=1}^{23} \cot^{-1}\left(1 + \sum_{k=1}^{n} 2k\right)\right\} is
  1. A.
    2325\dfrac{23}{25}
  2. B.
    2523\dfrac{25}{23}
  3. C.
    2324\dfrac{23}{24}
  4. D.
    2423\dfrac{24}{23}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: B

Solution

The inner sum ∑(k=1 to n) 2k = n(n+1), so each term becomes cot⁻¹(1 + n(n+1)) = cot⁻¹(n² + n + 1).

Now use the identity: cot⁻¹(n² + n + 1) = tan⁻¹(1/(n²+n+1)) = tan⁻¹((n+1) - n)/(1 + n(n+1)) = tan⁻¹(n+1) - tan⁻¹(n).

So the sum telescopes: ∑(n=1 to 23) [tan⁻¹(n+1) - tan⁻¹(n)] = tan⁻¹(24) - tan⁻¹(1).

Therefore cot(tan⁻¹(24) - tan⁻¹(1)) = cot(tan⁻¹((24-1)/(1+24))) = cot(tan⁻¹(23/25)) = 25/23.
