JEE Main 2006 Mathematics question on Trigonometry

The set of values of θ\theta satisfying the inequation 2sin⁡2θ−5sin⁡θ+2>02\sin^2\theta - 5\sin\theta + 2 > 0, where 0<θ<2π0 < \theta < 2\pi, is
  1. A.
    (0,π6)∪(5π6,2π)\left(0, \dfrac{\pi}{6}\right) \cup \left(\dfrac{5\pi}{6}, 2\pi\right)
  2. B.
    [0,π6]∪[5π6,2π]\left[0, \dfrac{\pi}{6}\right] \cup \left[\dfrac{5\pi}{6}, 2\pi\right]
  3. C.
    [0,π3]∪[2π3,2π]\left[0, \dfrac{\pi}{3}\right] \cup \left[\dfrac{2\pi}{3}, 2\pi\right]
  4. D.
    None of the above
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

Factor: 2sin²θ - 5sinθ + 2 = (2sinθ - 1)(sinθ - 2) > 0.

Since sinθ - 2 < 0 always, dividing by it flips the inequality: 2sinθ - 1 < 0, i.e., sinθ < 1/2.

In (0, 2π), sinθ < 1/2 holds when θ ∈ (0, π/6) ∪ (5π/6, 2π) — the endpoints θ = π/6 and 5π/6 give sinθ = 1/2, making the expression zero (not > 0), so they are excluded, giving open intervals.
