JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on Atomic Structure

The number of given orbitals which have electron density along the axis is px,py,pz,dxy,dxz,dyz,dx2−y2,dz2,sp_x, p_y, p_z, d_{xy}, d_{xz}, d_{yz}, d_{x^2-y^2}, d_{z^2}, s
Show answer and solution

Answer: 5

Solution

The orbitals with electron density along the axes (lobes pointing along x, y, or z axes) are:

1. pₓ — lobes along x-axis
2. py — lobes along y-axis
3. pz — lobes along z-axis
4. dx²-y² — lobes along x and y axes
5. dz² — lobes along z-axis (and a toroidal ring in xy-plane)

The s orbital has spherical symmetry (density everywhere, not specifically "along" axes), and dxy, dxz, dyz have lobes between the axes, not along them. So the count is 5.
