The hybridization and magnetic behaviour of cobalt ion in complex, respectively is
- A.and paramagnetic
- B.and paramagnetic
- C.and diamagnetic
- D.and diamagnetic
Show answer and solution
Correct option: C
Solution
Co³⁺ is a d⁶ ion. NH₃ is a strong field ligand, so it causes pairing of all 6 d-electrons into the lower t₂g set (t₂g⁶ eg⁰), leaving two inner 3d orbitals empty. These two empty 3d orbitals combine with one 4s and three 4p orbitals to give d²sp³ (inner orbital) hybridization. Since all electrons are paired, the complex has zero unpaired electrons and is diamagnetic.
