JEE Main 1989 Chemistry question on Atomic Structure

The correct set of quantum numbers for the unpaired electron of chlorine atom is
  1. A.
    n=2, l=1, m=0n=2, \ l=1, \ m=0
  2. B.
    n=2, l=1, m=1n=2, \ l=1, \ m=1
  3. C.
    n=3, l=1, m=1n=3, \ l=1, \ m=1
  4. D.
    n=3, l=0, m=0n=3, \ l=0, \ m=0
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

Chlorine (Z=17) has configuration 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁵. The unpaired electron is in the 3p subshell, so n=3 and l=1. By convention, filling the three p orbitals (m = -1, 0, +1) with 5 electrons pairs up m=-1 and m=0, leaving m=+1 with the unpaired electron. Thus n=3, l=1, m=1 is correct.
