JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on Chemical Bonding

The bond dissociation energy is highest for
  1. A.
    Br2\text{Br}_2
  2. B.
    F2\text{F}_2
  3. C.
    I2\text{I}_2
  4. D.
    Cl2\text{Cl}_2
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

Cl₂ has the highest bond dissociation energy among the halogens because its atomic size allows effective p-p orbital overlap without significant lone-pair repulsion. F₂, despite being smaller, has anomalously low bond energy (~159 kJ/mol) due to strong lone-pair–lone-pair repulsions between the very closely spaced, electron-dense F atoms. Cl₂ (~243 kJ/mol) > Br₂ (~193 kJ/mol) > I₂ (~151 kJ/mol) > F₂, making Cl₂ the correct answer.
