JEE Main 2023 Chemistry question on d- and f-Block Elements

Potassium dichromate acts as a strong oxidizing agent in acidic solution. During this process, the oxidation state changes from
  1. A.
    +6+6 to +3+3
  2. B.
    +6+6 to +2+2
  3. C.
    +3+3 to +1+1
  4. D.
    +2+2 to +1+1
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

In K₂Cr₂O₇, chromium is in the +6 oxidation state. In acidic solution, the dichromate ion (Cr₂O₇²⁻) gets reduced to Cr³⁺ ions, so each Cr atom gains 3 electrons (goes from +6 to +3). This corresponds to a gain of 6 electrons per dichromate ion, making it a powerful oxidizing agent in acidic medium.
