JEE Main 2019 Mathematics question on Sets Relations and Functions

Let ∑k=110f(a+k)=16(210−1)\sum_{k=1}^{10} f(a+k) = 16(2^{10}-1), where the function ff satisfies f(x+y)=f(x)f(y)f(x+y) = f(x)f(y) for all natural numbers xx, yy and f(1)=2f(1) = 2. Then, the natural number 'aa' is
  1. A.
    2
  2. B.
    4
  3. C.
    3
  4. D.
    16
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

f(x+y) = f(x)f(y) with f(1) = 2 means f(n) = 2n for all natural numbers n.

So f(a+k) = 2^(a+k), and the sum becomes:

∑(k=1 to 10) 2^(a+k) = 2a · (2¹ + 2² + ... + 2¹⁰) = 2a · 2(2¹⁰ - 1)/(2-1) = 2^(a+1) · (2¹⁰ - 1)

Setting equal to 16(2¹⁰ - 1):

2^(a+1) = 16 = 2⁴ → a+1 = 4 → a = 3.
