JEE Main 2001 Mathematics question on Sets Relations and Functions

Let E={1,2,3,4}E = \{1, 2, 3, 4\} and F={1,2}F = \{1, 2\}. Then, the number of onto functions from EE to FF is
  1. A.
    14
  2. B.
    16
  3. C.
    12
  4. D.
    8
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

Total functions from E to F = 2⁴ = 16. Subtract functions that are NOT onto: functions mapping entirely to {1} or entirely to {2} = 2. Onto functions = 16 - 2 = 14.
