JEE Main 2009 Mathematics question on Sequences and Series

If the sum of first nn terms of an AP is cn2cn^2, then the sum of squares of these nn terms is
  1. A.
    n(4n2−1)c26\dfrac{n(4n^2-1)c^2}{6}
  2. B.
    n(4n2+1)c23\dfrac{n(4n^2+1)c^2}{3}
  3. C.
    n(4n2−1)c23\dfrac{n(4n^2-1)c^2}{3}
  4. D.
    n(4n2+1)c26\dfrac{n(4n^2+1)c^2}{6}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

The nth term is aₙ = S(n) - S(n-1) = cn² - c(n-1)² = c(2n-1).

Sum of squares = c² Σ(2k-1)² from k=1 to n = c² Σ(4k²-4k+1).

= c²[4·n(n+1)(2n+1)/6 - 4·n(n+1)/2 + n]

= c²·n[4(n+1)(2n+1)/6 - 2(n+1) + 1]

= c²·n[(4(2n²+3n+1)/6) - 2n - 2 + 1]

= c²·n[(8n²+12n+4)/6 - 2n - 1]

= c²·n[(8n²+12n+4 - 12n - 6)/6]

= c²·n[(8n²-2)/6]

= c²·n·2(4n²-1)/6

= n(4n²-1)c²/3.
