JEE Main 2004 Mathematics question on Matrices and Determinants

If A=[α22α]A = \begin{bmatrix} \alpha & 2 \\ 2 & \alpha \end{bmatrix} and ∣A3∣=125|A^3| = 125, then the value of α\alpha is
  1. A.
    ±1\pm 1
  2. B.
    ±2\pm 2
  3. C.
    ±3\pm 3
  4. D.
    ±5\pm 5
Show answer and solution

Correct option: C

Solution

|A| = α² - 4, so |A³| = |A|³ = (α² - 4)³ = 125. Taking cube root: α² - 4 = 5, giving α² = 9, so α = ±3.
