JEE Main 1996 Mathematics question on Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations

For positive integers n1,n2n_1, n_2 the value of expression (1+i)n1+(1+i3)n1+(1+i5)n2+(1+i7)n2(1+i)^{n_1} + (1+i^3)^{n_1} + (1+i^5)^{n_2} + (1+i^7)^{n_2}, here i=−1i = \sqrt{-1} is a real number, if and only if
  1. A.
    n1=n2+1n_1 = n_2 + 1
  2. B.
    n1=n2−1n_1 = n_2 - 1
  3. C.
    n1=n2n_1 = n_2
  4. D.
    n1>0,n2>0n_1 > 0, n_2 > 0
Show answer and solution

Correct option: D

Solution

Since i³ = -i, i⁵ = i, i⁷ = -i, the expression becomes:

(1+i)n₁ + (1-i)n₁ + (1+i)n₂ + (1-i)n₂

Now (1+i) and (1-i) are complex conjugates, so (1+i)n + (1-i)n is always real for any positive integer n (sum of conjugates = 2·Re[(1+i)n]).

Thus the entire expression = 2·Re[(1+i)n₁] + 2·Re[(1+i)n₂], which is real for ALL positive integers n₁ and n₂, with no restriction needed between them.
