JEE Main 2023 Physics question on Atoms and Nuclei

Consider the following radioactive decay process

84218A→αA1→β−A2→γA3→αA4→β+A5→γA6{}^{218}_{84}A \xrightarrow{\alpha} A_1 \xrightarrow{\beta^-} A_2 \xrightarrow{\gamma} A_3 \xrightarrow{\alpha} A_4 \xrightarrow{\beta^+} A_5 \xrightarrow{\gamma} A_6

The mass number and the atomic number of A6A_6 are given by:
  1. A.
    210 and 82
  2. B.
    210 and 80
  3. C.
    211 and 80
  4. D.
    210 and 84
Show answer and solution

Correct option: B

Solution

Start with A: mass 218, atomic number 84.

α decay: mass −4, Z −2 → A₁: (214, 82)
β⁻ decay: mass unchanged, Z +1 → A₂: (214, 83)
γ decay: mass and Z unchanged → A₃: (214, 83)
α decay: mass −4, Z −2 → A₄: (210, 81)
β⁺ decay: mass unchanged, Z −1 → A₅: (210, 80)
γ decay: mass and Z unchanged → A₆: (210, 80)

So A₆ has mass number 210 and atomic number 80.
