JEE Main 2023 Physics question on Oscillations and Waves

A travelling wave is described by the equation

y(x,t)=[0.05sin⁡(8x−4t)] my(x, t) = [0.05 \sin(8x - 4t)] \text{ m}

The velocity of the wave is : [all the quantities are in SI unit]
  1. A.
    0.5 ms−10.5 \text{ ms}^{-1}
  2. B.
    2 ms−12 \text{ ms}^{-1}
  3. C.
    8 ms−18 \text{ ms}^{-1}
  4. D.
    4 ms−14 \text{ ms}^{-1}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

Wave speed v = ω/k = 4/8 = 0.5 ms⁻¹, where ω = 4 rad/s is the angular frequency and k = 8 rad/m is the wave number read directly from the equation y = 0.05 sin(8x − 4t).
