JEE Main 1998 Mathematics question on Probability

A fair coin is tossed repeatedly. If tail appears on first four tosses, then the probability of head appearing on fifth toss equals
  1. A.
    12\frac{1}{2}
  2. B.
    132\frac{1}{32}
  3. C.
    3132\frac{31}{32}
  4. D.
    15\frac{1}{5}
Show answer and solution

Correct option: A

Solution

Each coin toss is an independent event, so the outcome of previous tosses has no effect on the next toss. The probability of head on the fifth toss remains 1/2 regardless of what happened on the first four tosses.
